New funding from CIHR to advance our understanding of Parkinson's disease

Nic recently received the amazing news that the lab will receive a second 5-year Project Grant from CIHR to reveal how striatal circuits adapt molecularly and functionally to the progressive degeneration of dopamine neurons in mouse models of Parkinson's disease. This project stems from key observations made in a recent publication from our lab (Maltese et al, 2021), in which we observed that the likelihood that dopamine evokes aberrant neural activity underlying dyskinesia is exquisitely sensitive to the density of dopamine axons. This application was only made possible by the hard work of graduate student Jenna Martin and postdoctoral fellows Saige Power, Riccardo Melani and Marta Maltese, who worked arduously for several years to generate all of the preliminary data underlying this highly translational and promising research project. We cannot wait to get started and take it to the next level!
